How the economy is affecting the equine industry

The knock on effect of the poor state of the UK's economy is dreadful for many horses out there. We hear every day tales of horses being left at auctions and abandoned in fields. It seems the same problems are in Ireland and were impressed to read the article from the Horse and Hound below about Denis Lynch's efforts to help the horses affected.

We all know that times are hard, and from a point of view of buying equipment for horse and rider, we strongly suggest that purchases are carefully considered. As in all instances you get what you pay for, so if you know the item you're looking for is going to be used every day it will most probably work out better value for money to buy the best quality option, rather than the lesser durable that will have to be replaced.

Denis Lynch acts to help Ireland's abandoned horses

Irish showjumper Denis Lynch is launching a campaign to raise money and find new homes for Ireland's neglected and abandoned horses.

 

Denis wants to raise "a substantial amount of money" to help the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) deal with the country's horse crisis.

 

Last year H&H highlighted the suffering in Ireland, where where ponies and horses have have become terribly undervalued as a result of overbreeding and the economic downturn (news feature, 19 August 2010).

 

"The subject has been preying on my mind for months. I had to do something. Horses should not treated like this," said Denis, who hails from Co Tipperary but is based in Germany.

 

"Being in showjumping I have access to some very affluent people and I have already got a number of donations to my fund," he added.

 

Denis launches his appeal at the CSI4* in Basel this week and hopes to encourage fellow riders and owners to contribute.

 

ISPCA chief executive Noel Griffin said: "We are extremely grateful for Denis' offer of help. We have a very severe problem, with more horses needing help them we can cope with."

 

After recuperation, some of the horses rescued by Irish charities could make riding school horses and hunters, believes Denis, and he hopes to expand his help to the ISPCA to help find new homes for them.

 

"I have already had 600 or so offers from people who are able to help rehome these horses and there are breeders in Holland and Germany who are willing to look after horses while they recover," said Denis.

 

But no arrangement has yet been agreed with the ISPCA.

 

"We still need to discuss all the details," said Mr Griffin.

Ahhh it's freezing!

Oooooooh it's freezing here in Cheshire!   All here at Equestrian Supplies Shop love a white sparkly winter but only if us and our neds are well equipped! Here's what our team can't live without when the temperatures go below zero: Tom - 'Riding really early before work I couldn't cope with cold hands and feet so I rely on my SealSkinz gloves and socks. I also have a lot of horses to wash for the show at the weekend and in these temperatures they all need a good cooler to dry them off to stop them getting a chill, I'd be lost without my Coolex Coolers. Paul - 'I spend a lot of hours supporting my daughter while she competes her pony which she insists I do in style. Thankfully she approves of my Kingsland gilet which also keeps pneumonia at bay throughout Winter League!' Gill - 'I avoid the winter, but my dogs need a walk every morning so  I do it in style with my furry accessories which are a god send and guarantee me a few compliments too!'  Gemma - 'Changing rugs is so time consuming but in these temperatures I can't bear the thought of my horses getting cold so I invest in some seriously warm rugs - the Horseware ones have been a great investment for me and save me loads of time every day.' Rebecca - 'My new pup was a summer baby and is not impressed with the cold - I have softened the blow with a really gorgeous doggy coat - he looks so cute too :)' Sacha - 'I am famous for being permanently cold so in this weather I have to really talk myself out of hibernation - thankfully this year Kingsland have cheered me up with my new jumper it cheers me up no end!'

H2go Water Bags are helping to keep me sane

Snow novelty has officially worn off. There's no need to ask how everyone is finding stable duties at the moment, but this morning in a flash of inspiration I ditched my water buts for the H2go water bag I had from the summer. Doing the waters was so much quicker - the way the water is carried in the h2go makes it easier to push in a barrow and because you can tip it by just lifting the barrow you don't get wet freezing cold gloves and have to go back to the car/house/tack room for emergency dry glove supplies. We don't like to think of fellow horse owners struggling so we've just put them in the sale too. Hope they can be of help!

We can't believe how quickly the nights have drawn in!

 

We love riding our horses out round the lanes, but are well aware of the dangers caused by sharing those lanes with motorists in a hurry. We love the information that the British Horse Society provides about what to do to keep hacking as safely as possible and have provided it below.

'Hi-viz' clothing

 

When out riding, it is strongly recommended that all riders wear fluorescent/reflective clothing – ‘hi viz’ at all times of day regardless of the prevailing weather conditions, time of year, or time of day. When riding out on the public highway, a hi-viz tabard or jacket will give any driver three additional seconds in which to see you. This may not sound a lot, but if you consider that driving at 30 mph, a driver will travel the length of a full size dressage arena in that time, you can appreciate the additional reaction time that this will allow him, to help him see you and take appropriate action.

There are many types of clothing on the market now and at many different prices, but there is something to suit everyone. Hi-viz sheets for the horse, jackets/tabards for the riders, hi-viz bits to add to the bridle, tail and martingale, plus hat covers and hat bands, dabs for the back of your hands – the list is limitless and there are new products coming onto the market all the time.

Prices are varied from a couple of pounds for a simple tabard from a builders merchant, or from the supermarket, to whatever you want to pay for a very stylish jacket.

There is no law that states riders must wear this equipment but it is in their very best interests to do so – not just because drivers will see them on the road sooner. Riders can also be seen sooner when riding off-road. Research with the MoD showed that a helicopter can see a rider in hi-viz gear up to half a mile sooner and thus allowing them to avoid over flying riders and we have had many reports that this is happening. Also, in the event that a rider falls from their horse and is injured, wearing hi-viz clothing enables the Air Ambulance or Police helicopter to see the rider lying in countryside.

 

Moorlands Totilas

Everyone here has been wowed watching Totilas with Edward Gal and their jaw dropping dressage performances. Hearing how sad Edward was when the horse was sold to Paul Schockemohle we all had every sympathy, but sometimes the only thing to do is look to the positives and celebrate the great times the best you can.

We look forward to seeing what Paul Schockemohle has planned for Totilas and are sure he will make a fantastic impact on sports horse breeding in the future.

The Champions Tour
